Workplace Incident Investigation

This program will teach you what you need to know to predict, prevent, and respond to workplace incidents, as recommended by Canadian Standards Association Z1005-17: Incident Investigation. The skills learned in this course can also be a useful tool in identifying and eliminating hazards that lead to less serious incidents that result in minor injuries, lost time, or damaged equipment.

This training is ideal for anyone in a supervisory or health and safety related role. It can also be beneficial for workers who want to develop the skills to identify and address potential hazards or near-misses before an incident occurs.

This training program will take about 1.5-2 hours to complete. It contains 6 chapters and a final exam. Your training is fully narrated and includes interactive activities at the end of every chapter. Once you have completed the final exam, you will be issued a wallet sized certificate of completion as well as a 8.5″ x 11″ diploma as proof of training. Your certificate is valid for a period of 3 years, at which point, refresher training will be required to maintain your certification.

Throughout the training program, you will also be provided with downloadable resources which can be used as reference materials for building an incident investigation kit. Once your training is complete, you will have unlimited access to the training materials and resources if you require a refresher on the information or need to re-download any resources or forms.

This incident investigation training course has been developed in accordance with CSA standard Z1005-17 and is intended to be completed entirely online. Course Outline

1.Introduction

The introduction of this Incident Investigation course informs students of the purpose of incident investigation training as well as the learning objectives for this program. Students will also learn how to use the tools included within the course. (5 Minutes)

2.Hazard Categories & Near Misses

Chapter 1 teaches students how investigations are used, how to identify the six hazard categories, and how to describe near-misses and the cause of incidents. (20 Minutes)

3.Assessment Tools & Methods

The second chapter focuses on applying three key assessment tools and methods to incident investigations. You will also learn to define the contents and purpose of investigation kits. (20 Minutes)

4.Inspections And Investigations

In chapter 3, students will learn how to explain the importance of maintaining the inspection process, explain the impact of a robust inspection process, and describe the benefits of investigations. (10 Minutes)

5.Internal & External Roles & Responsibilities

Chapter 4 explains the inspector’s role, describes how investigations are pursued, and defines the roles that workplace parties perform. (15 Minutes)

6.The Investigation Process

By the end of chapter 5 you will be able to define the goal of investigations and explain the seven-step investigation process. (25 Minutes)

7.Reporting & Communication

Chapter 6 will help you to understand when to apply internal or external reporting requirements. You will also learn how to describe reporting components, outline the basic reporting tools, and identify steps to prepare for reporting events. (10 Minutes)
